Watch: The likely next Superintendent of WCSD talks about what kind of person she would want as second in command Reno Gazette Journal
This is a breaking news story and will be updated.
The Washoe County School District voted 6 to 1 to name Kristen McNeill as its next superintendent.
“I am truly grateful for your decision today,” McNeill said just moments after rejoining the meeting, which was done on Zoom.
“I know there will be challenging times ahead,” McNeill said about learning from mistakes.
McNeill held back tears as she thanked her family for helping see her through the process.
“I can’t wait for tomorrow and what it is going to bring us,” she said.
McNeill, who has been at the district for more than 20 years, was named interim on July 1, after the school board ousted Traci Davis.
Trustee Jacqueline Calvert was the only one who didn’t vote in favor of appointing McNeill to the top post.
The board voted to allow in-house counsel Neil Rombardo to negotiate a contract with McNeill. McNeill assumes the top post immediately and her contract could negotiate her pay and benefits back to the board’s vote on Tuesday night.
The district suspended a national search after the coronavirus pandemic shut schools and made it hard to recruit for the top post.
“It’s hard to not go through every step we had laid out to do,” said Trustee Angela Taylor, who said she wanted to see McNeill earn the top post by the going through a full search.
But the board praised McNeill for proving herself over the last few months including as schools were closed by Gov. Steve Sisolak.
“She earned this position,” said Board President Malena Raymond.
Trustee Andrew Caudill said the culture in the district was viewed previously as leaders “talking the talk.”
“Ever since July 1, Kristen McNeill has been walking the walk,” Caudill said.
“This is the best move for our district,” he said. “It is going to be a breath of fresh air for our community and staff.
