Xavier Martinez, 12, was asleep at his home in Sparks Wednesday night when he and his mother heard loud banging and what he thought were gunshots.
“I couldn’t tell if it was banging or gunshots and it sounded like both at the same time,” Martinez said. “I was even more scared because it sounded like it was coming right from my window in my room so before I went to my bed, I grabbed one of my fake guns just in case and didn’t sleep at all after that.”
Police say they received calls from the 900 block of Crestwood Dr. at approximately 11:30 p.m. about shots being fired.
Officers found a person with gunshot wounds in their lower body and rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived, according to police. His injuries were not life-threatening.
Martinez said he and his mother were woken up by the sounds coming from outside.
“My mom said someone was banging on our window and I heard gunshots,” he said. “I just panicked and I didn’t know what it was.”
Detectives discovered that multiple people were involved and fired weapons, according to police.
Several buildings and vehicles were struck by the gunfire, but no other injuries have been reported.
Sparks police declined to provide further information on the age of the victim, descriptions of suspects, what may have led up to the shooting, or names of any gangs suspected to be involved, citing the ongoing investigation.
The Regional Gang Unit is assisting with the ongoing investigation and no arrests have been made.
