The Washoe County High School Class of 2033 needs to register for kindergarten.
It’s a message the district is pushing as registrations for kindergarten for the 2020-21 school year are down by as much as 50 percent compared to previous years.
Any child who is 5 on or before September 30, 2020 may enroll in kindergarten.
“Kindergarten is such an important milestone in our little one’s lives,” said Superintendent Kristen McNeill.
McNeill said she still remembers crying when she dropped off her now 25-year-old son for kindergarten.
Typically in a school year, as many 4,500 to 5,000 students register for kindergarten, with most of those already signed up by now. McNeill said this year’s registrations are down by thousands compared to previous school years, adding that it’s hard to exactly calculate how many students will be entering the district for the first time.
McNeill said in every grade level fewer people have registered for the upcoming school year. Registration helps the district to plan for teachers and supplies at each school.
She said the COVID-19 crisis may to to blame as families have been focused on other things.
Here’s how to register
The district is opening schools starting Tuesday to help families bring in paperwork.
It’s a two-step process, said Kindergarten Coordinator Kacey Edgington.
The first step is to go online and complete registration. After online registration is done, you need to call the school to make an appointment to bring in a birth certificate, immunization records and proof or address.
The district is waiting for guidance for how the new school year will look amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Decisions have not been made if school will be a traditional day or if students will be attending part-time with remote learning or if distance learning will be a full-time option.
“There is a saying, that says, ‘All I really needed to know, I learned in kindergarten,’” Edgington said. “That saying is so true.”
